Our 8th-grade ELA students recently wrapped up a pre-Frankenstein activity combining creative collaboration and critical thinking. After reading and analyzing a short biography about Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, students wrote short-answer responses connecting events from her life to the themes of her iconic novel.
As a final task, each student was given a piece of a larger puzzle, featuring a comprehension question about Shelley’s biography. After answering, they colored their piece, and when assembled, the pieces revealed a striking image of Frankenstein’s monster.
Students worked together to coordinate their artistic approach, selecting shading techniques and ensuring consistency. The completed posters were showcased, and teachers and students voted for their favorite.
